From a surface point of view, beauty is truly skin-deep. Everyone would like to have skin that is as clear and even as the airbrushed and beautifully made-up skin shown on models in fashion magazines.
The truth is that over time, most of us develop areas of irregular skin pigmentation or surface irregularities on the skin as a result of mild or significant skin problems. The good news is that there has been a dramatic advance in skin resurfacing to help even-out skin pigmentation or to remove unwanted red areas (think of rosacea) or brown splotches (melasma) on the face. The nice thing about dramatic resurfacing is that it also tightens the skin at the same time, visibly reducing wrinkles.
The first major advance in dramatic resurfacing came with the development of intense pulsed light ("IPL") techniques in 1995. Dr. Krausen was one of the first providers of dramatic resurfacing in the country. Now the third and fourth generation of equipment is available at The Skin Center of Wisconsin.
The Skin Center of Wisconsin can help you choose from among three resurfacing procedures that provide excellent results. Read below about Pixel, Fractional Carbon Dioxide Lasers, and Traditional Carbon Dioxide Lasering.
Pixel is a type of erbium laser that provides moderate skin tightening. The Pixel laser treatments are built around the shorter wavelength of the erbium laser. Therefore patients of color, such as those with Latino or Asian heritage can be successfully treated by the delicate vaporization of the outer layer of the skin without a deep thermal heating of the deeper layers of the skin.
The surface areas and fine line wrinkles are treated by Pixel in a sequence of 3-4 monthly treatments done over the course of four months. Downtime is usually 2-4 days of mild redness which can be covered with a light foundation make-up. Fine line wrinkles and creases are gradually improved as the skin tightens. The Pixel procedure is often combined with the use of fillers to create a nicer looking skin surface after volume has been added to put the fullness of youth back onto facial structures.
The Carbon Dioxide ("CO2") Laser is the gold standard for non-surgical skin tightening. With a longer wavelength of light being utilized, there is deeper heating to the lower levels of the skin that results in significant new collagen formation and elastic bundle creation in the skin itself that dramatically corrects acne scars and pruning lines around the face and mouth. In patients who have had major sun damage from over-zealous tanning in their lives or in tanning booths, the CO2 laser can incredibly reverse many of those unwanted changes.
With fractional CO2 lasering, there are wonderful results with 5-9 days of downtime. There are some newer skin care products that Dr. Krausen has added to the post-procedure regimen that definitely shortens the recovery period.
For those patients who have had a more significant problem with skin surface weakening from years of sun or from major acne issues at an earlier time in life, the Traditional CO2 Laser is also available. This is especially useful for patients with deep wrinkles around the mouth and those with too many years of strong "eye smiling". Recovery time with the Traditional CO2 Laser is slightly longer than with the Fractional CO2 Laser - 7-10 days before foundation make-up can be used. Patients who have had a dramatic aging of their skin far beyond their age (40-70) would be the ideal candidates for the Traditional CO2 Laser.
All follow-up visits are covered up for to two years after the procedure.
